The Department of Housing and Queensland University of Technology are working in partnership to create the Village, an innovative mixed-use development on 17 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, just two kilometres from the Central Business District. We are working with a number of partners to create an exciting and vibrant destination which includes speciality shops, restaurants and cafes, a full line supermarket, entertainment options including a theatre, food outlets and residential apartments.

Artillery Units Book Launch

Artillery Units Book Launch
Artillery Units at Kelvin Grove authors (from left to right) Con Lucey, Rob Collins, Gerry Keates, Peter Arnison, David Burgess, Arthur Burke, Rex Kirkham, John Duncan and Nigel Stevens.

The Kelvin Grove Barracks Artillery Historical Group has written a book titled Artillery Units at Kelvin Grove – a tribute to their guns and gunners.

The Historical Group was assembled by one of the first National Servicemen of the 1950s scheme, Rex Kirkham. It was formed to produce a written record of the guns and gunners who have been an integral part of the Kelvin Grove Barracks since 1915. Other members of the group (who all authored the book) were also national servicemen from the 1950s – David Burgess, Rob Collins, John Duncan, Gerry Keates, Con Lucey and Nigel Stevens. The final author, who also undertook the editorial and publishing tasks, is Arthur Burke, originally a Kelvin Grove gunner who is currently the Colonel Commandant RAA in Queensland.

Beginning with a militia setting just before World War I, the book traces the gunner units’ histories though to the Vietnam War period and their tapering off in 1988. It is intermingled with information about military topical events of the time.

The book was launched at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Community Hub by Major General Peter Arnison AC CVO (Retd) on Thursday 22 February.

The books have been printed using a grant from the Brisbane City Council Community Grants program and cost $6 (including postage). They can be ordered through the Gunner Signallers’ Club, 312 Webster Road, Stafford, Queensland 4053.

For more information, contact Colonel Arthur Burke OAM JP RAA (Retd) on (07) 3263 6025.

Icon sign installed

Icon sign installed

If you have been driving down Kelvin Grove Road during the last few weeks you may have noticed the new Icon sign for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. Installed on 19 March in the median strip on Musk Avenue on the corner of Kelvin Grove Road, it is a destination marker for the Village. It promotes the many retail outlets and facilities in the Village including LaBoite Theatre and the Supa IGA supermarket as well as the cafes, restaurants and produce markets. If you haven’t already experienced first hand what it is like to live, learn, work or play at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village then take a detour at the Icon sign next time you’re travelling along Kelvin Grove Road.

Community meetings

Kelvin Grove Urban Village community meetings are now being held monthly. They are open to all residents and people who work in the area. The meetings provide an opportunity to meet other locals, discuss activities and events, and learn what is happening in the Village.

The next meeting is being held on Tuesday 24 April from 5.30pm to 7pm in the Community Hub, Level 2, 8 Carraway Street, Kelvin Grove. For more information or to register your interest in being involved, contact the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Community Hub on (07) 3318 3660.

Restricted street parking introduced at the Village

For the last few months visitors to the Village have been able to enjoy unrestricted parking around most of the Village Centre. However, yellow lines have now been installed along Carraway Street preventing any further parking alongside the sidewalk diners. Musk Avenue has also had signs installed restricting parking to two hours. Customers of the Village Centre are able to park for free for 1.5 hours. If they spend over $25 at the centre they can validate their carparking ticket at the newsagent and park for free.

Effective Use of Broadband Award recognition

The Australian Telecommunications Users Group (ATUG)’s 23rd Annual Conference, Gala Dinner and National Awards night was held in Sydney on the 7 and 8 March. At the awards dinner the Kelvin Grove Urban Village received a Special Mention for the Effective Use of Broadband at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. The Special Mention was received for the effective use of broadband which has been implemented to provide and extend accessibility to services for the community.

A Swapping Success

A Swapping Success

Over 350 people exchanged more than 2500 buttons in the second community Swap event at the Creative Industries Precinct on 15 March. During the three hour event ‘swappers’ exchanged buttons for pre-loved goodies like vintage bags and clothing, classic DVDs and back issues of Vogue magazine.

From mums with babies to QUT students and staff to residents of the local aged care home Hilltop Gardens at Kelvin Grove, enthusiastic swappers of every description spent hours meticulously combing the mountains of donated goods for that special item.

Swap participants donate goods in return for buttons which are then used to ‘buy’ other donated items.  All remaining items are then donated to local charities by organisers.

The event has even generated its own lingo, with ‘Swap karma’ being used by participants to describe the Swap ethos; if you donate good quality items, you’ll be rewarded with great finds.

The growing success of The Swap means it’ll be back bigger and better than ever in the next few months, check www.ciprecinct.qut.com for updates.

Residents win competition by viewing exhibition

The Creative Industries Precinct would like to thank all the local Kelvin Grove Urban Village residents who came along to see the first exhibition of 2007 – The Shape of Things to Come. A competition which was open to residents who visited the exhibition during February and March, was won by the McFarlanes of Hartopp Lane. Congratulations to the winners who will be treated to a delicious meal for two at Noodles Inc (Carraway Street) as their prize.

Keep your eyes open for our next free exhibition Figuratively Speaking in late May.
