Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing Robert Schwarten launched the Brisbane Housing Company’s latest project at the Village with Chairman Kevin Seymour on 26 July.
The $6 million complex at 81 Musk Avenue will deliver 42 units of affordable accommodation in a mixture of one and two-bedroom units, studios and boarding house rooms. It has been designed by leading Brisbane architects Arkhefield to blend in with neighbouring buildings and meet the design guidelines for all developments at the Village.
“Affordable housing like this brings stability into the lives of people whose needs are not met in the private rental market,” Mr Schwarten said.
“It benefits the wider community as well with tenants being able to take up employment, training or other activities when they have safe and secure living arrangements close to transport and job opportunities.
The complex, which includes some commercial space on the ground level, has a target completion of April 2006. The Brisbane Housing Company already has another complex under construction in Ramsgate Street, which is scheduled to be finished December this year. Its remaining two developments are likely to begin construction in September 2005 and early 2006 respectively.

Visitors to the Kelvin Grove Urban Village will notice bright and colourful new wayfinding signage in place to help them navigate their way around the area. The signs are in place at key entry points and crossroads. Historical signs have also been placed in each of the parks (Parer Place, Chauvel Place, McCaskie Park, Kulgun Park, Kundu Park and Grey Gums Park) and describe the history of each site or the people after which they are named.

The Village Edge
|
 |
| |
The Badcock Wright Joint Venture has launched the Village Edge, its townhouse and apartment development overlooking Kulgun Park in the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.
The development comprises seven 3-storey townhouses, known as Maidstone, and 27 two-and three-bedroom apartments, known as Ramsgate. Residents will have private access to pool and gym facilities, lifts and undercover parking. The developments have been designed by Arkhefield with the Queensland climate in mind, taking advantage of cross-flow ventilation and open plan living, and using timber and light weight materials similar to traditional Queenslanders.
Construction on The Village Edge is expected to start later in 2005, with completion by the end of 2006. Full details are available from the Sales Office at 62 Blamey Street, Kelvin Grove. |

- SunnyCove has also lodged plans with the Council for development approval for its managed seniors' accommodation in Ramsgate Street.
- The Department of Housing is investigating opportunities for commercial development on some of its sites to be released to the market later this year. Following a tender process, the department has appointed Savills as its commercial sales agent.
