Welcome to the Kelvin Grove Urban Village e-newsletter, which will keep you up-to-date with the latest happenings at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, an exciting first for Queensland.

The Department of Housing and Queensland University of Technology are working in partnership to create the Village, an innovative mixed-use development on 17 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, just two kilometres from the Central Business District. We are working with a number of partners to create an exciting and vibrant destination which includes speciality shops, restaurants and cafes, a full line supermarket, entertainment options including a theatre, food outlets and residential apartments. Make sure you visit the Kelvin Grove Urban Village during the holiday period to see how quickly this new inner-urban precinct is coming together.

Community Hub opens to residents

The Kelvin Grove Urban Village Community Hub is now open and available for use by the community. Located in the Village Centre, it is a space for community group meetings, presentations and special events. It will also be used to deliver programs such as the community well-being program and schools program. The Community Hub is open to the public from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so visitors can view the project model, other displays and information about the development.

For further information or to make a booking, phone 3318 3660 or visit the Kelvin Grove Urban Village website.

Village Centre officially opened

The Village Centre was officially opened by Premier Peter Beattie on Sunday 26 November. The day was well attended and people at the event were able to enjoy the entertainment, watch cooking demonstrations, meet the locals and take a tour of the Village.

Another land sale almost complete

Calls for Expressions of Interest for lots 35 and 36 on Victoria Park Road recently closed with several offers received. The sites, situated in a hilltop position on the edge of the Village, offer great development and marketable features:

  • potential city and bay views from the upper levels
  • elevated hilltop position, with Lot 35 adjoining Grey Gums Park
  • short walk to the Village Centre shops, including a supermarket, restaurants, cafes and specialty retailers
  • close to schools, university and golf course
  • centrally located 2km from the Brisbane CBD, with easy access to the Inner City Bypass and inner Northern Busway
  • walking distance to QUT’s pool, sports courts and gym, now under construction

The successul developer will be announced once the submissions have been evaluated in the new year.

More residential units underway

The Vintage Property Group will commence development of a 32-unit residential complex in School Street early in the new year. The complex will consist of two distinct buildings of two and four storeys, with units in a range of one, two and three bedroom configurations. Construction is expected to be completed in mid 2007.

For more information, contact the Vintage Property Group on 3850 0900.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) design competition

The Kelvin Grove Urban Village Project Team is conducting a design competition, seeking ideas and proposals for an installation (or multiple/distributed installations) at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village that will “display visual evidence of connectivity within the community”. This competition aims to attract students and professionals who have an interest in the visual and multimedia applications of Information and Communication Technology.

The competition has two streams. The student stream is available for full-time or part-time Australian secondary or tertiary students and offers a prize of $2,000. The open stream is available for everyone including businesses and offers a prize of $5,000. The indicative budget for creation and installation is $40,000.

The competition commences on 1 January 2007 and closes on 31 May 2007. For further details or to obtain an entry form visit the Kelvin Grove Urban Village website.

Kelvin Grove Urban Village Business Association launch

In November 2003, Premier Peter Beattie launched the completion of the major roads, landscaping and services at the award-winning Kelvin Grove Urban Village. Three years on, the Village has progressed dramatically and now includes QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct containing La Boite’s 400-seat Roundhouse Theatre, the Brisbane Housing Company’s two residential complexes, QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation and Indigo’s $120 million Village Centre.

To further progress the development of the Village, the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Business Association was officially launched on Wednesday 22 November. This association, made up of key stakeholders and businesses, will play a very active role in the marketing, promotion and future development of the Village. Membership of the Business Association is open to commercial and retail businesses as well as cultural, educational and community facilities. Membership is expected to expand as new developments are completed in the Village.

There is also a comprehensive list of local services including specialty retailers, convenience stores, educational facilities, medical practitioners and recreational and outdoor activities, just to name a few.

The handbook will be provided to all existing and new residents and copies can also be collected from the Community Hub in the Village Centre or by emailing enquiries@kgurbanvillage.com.au.

The Space Between
By Circa

Show Times: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 6.30pm (except opening night), Thursday to Saturday 8pm
Opening night: Wednesday 28 March 8pm

This is a unique theatre experience, acclaimed throughout Europe, Japan and Australia. Lyrical, physically extreme and joyously sensual, The Space Between is a powerful exploration of the things that keep us apart and our desire to be together. Three performers journey through explosive acrobatic encounters, lyrical duets and supple physical contortions, as they explore love, loss and desire. Visually drenched in layers of projection and set to a blend of Jacques Brel's songs, industrial sounds by Darrin Verhagin and DJ Shadow; this is stripped back circus of the heart.

For tickets, visit the Roundhouse Theatre website.
