The Queensland Government, through the Department of Housing, and Queensland University of Technology are working in partnership to create the Village, an innovative mixed-use development on 17 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, just two kilometres from the Central Business District. We are working with a number of partners to create an exciting and vibrant destination which includes speciality shops, restaurants and cafes, educational facilities, a full line supermarket, entertainment options including a theatre, food outlets and residential apartments.

Next Level Festival

It’s almost Christmas and we’re celebrating at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Entertainment includes a free screening of the Wizard of Oz in Kulgun Park on Carraway Street (between Musk Avenue and Ramsgate Street) on Friday 7 December, with pre-movie children’s entertainment from 5.30pm and the movie screening at 6.30pm. The movie is being hosted by the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Business Association. Food and drink will be available for sale from the adjacent businesses so bring your picnic blanket, lie back and relax under the stars.

Children who are preschool age or younger are invited to attend the free Kids Club Christmas party at 9.30am and 10.30am on Tuesday 11 December and Thursday 13 December. The party is being held in the Village Centre. The children will be entertained by the Fairy Angel Singers and there will be a visit from Santa.

Christmas carrollers will be singing while you shop at the Village Centre on Tuesday 18 December, and Rudolph and the Singing Elves will be present on Thursday 20 December.

The Next Level Festival which was held from Friday 26 - Sunday 28 October was a great success with more than 2,000 people attending the range of events offered at the Village. The 48 hour game challenge proved a hit with over 1,000 visits to the website. Also popular were the opening ceremony, Severed Heads, the Queensland Academy of Creative Industries Robot Parade, the Vintage Computer Club, Casio Nova and the Sixty Sox industry forum. A big thank you goes out to all those who attended and supported the range of events that were on offer. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

Creative Industries Precinct to expand

The second stage of the Queensland University of Technology’s Creative Industries Precinct is soon to become a reality with CRI being announced as the successful development group for the project. CRI will deliver the 9,000sq m building which will house dance studios, art spaces, administration space and music recording studios. Construction is expected to start in late 2008.

As part of the development, CRI will construct two A-grade commercial buildings within the Village. In total, the buildings will provide 41,000sq m of office space with the first building expected to be completed by 2010. The development will be situated just off Kelvin Grove Road and will demonstrate best practice in environmental sustainability with the inclusion of rain water harvesting, high levels of fresh air changes through the air conditioning systems and facilities to promote alternative forms of transport.

Village residents exemplary on energy useage

A recent study conducted within 295 apartments in three occupied developments within the Village found that occupants were using almost 50% less energy than the average south-east Queensland apartment. These results mean an average 34% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per apartment.

Occupants from within Indigo’s Village Centre development and those from within two Brisbane Housing Company complexes were monitored to calculate their daily energy use. In addition, 15 apartments and six retail shops participated in an in-depth energy use survey.

Indigo and the Brisbane Housing Company have made these results possible by incorporating good design features such as insulation, shading and natural ventilation in their development. This means that the residents rarely have to operate their ceiling fans or air conditioners.

QUT is working with Indigo and the Brisbane Housing Company to maximise the learnings from this study and to promote further sustainability initiatives within the development industry.

Northern Link Project

Northern Link is a proposed underground toll road between the Western Freeway, in Toowong, and the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove. It forms part of Brisbane City Council’s TransApex plan, released in 2005, which proposes to form an inner-city ring of motorway-grade roads.

If approved, Northern Link will be approximately 5.5km long, with approximately 4.7km of tunnels beneath the suburbs of Toowong, Auchenflower, Paddington, Red Hill, Spring Hill, and Kelvin Grove, connecting the Western Freeway and the Inner City Bypass.

Proposed plans for the Northern Link are currently available for public viewing at www.coordinatorgeneral.qld.gov.au/library/pdf/Northern_Link_Road_Tunnel_IAS_Figure2.pdf.

Students and builder work together to deliver lecture theatre

Four students from the Kelvin Grove State College industrial technology class were recently provided with the opportunity to help deliver a high-tech lecture theatre within the Village. Located on level two of the Centre for Health and Physical Activity, the lecture theatre will be the hub for knowledge transfer and research dissemination when the building opens in the New Year.

Baulderstone Hornibrook, the developer and builder of the Centre, provided carpenters to instruct and guide the students in best-practice performance and health and safety. The program helped to provide the students with an understanding of the tools of the trade and gain an insight into a possible career in the construction industry. Once completed, the raked seating design within the theatre will provide better viewing and allow for greater interaction from those using the space.

Vocational Education Training a success

The Vocational Education Training program that was recently undertaken from within the Community Hub is now complete and was a resounding success. The program was conducted to provide training and skills to 12 long-term unemployed people. The training recipients were primarily from the Village and were trained in research techniques, good communication skills for face-to-face and phone contact and in using keyboard and computer equipment. The task set for the trainees was to obtain data that would be used to produce a community profile for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

The project proved so successful in up-skilling the recruits, that most obtained employment before the project was completed, allowing others to also participate in the program. Those who haven’t found employment yet have gained good contacts and many new skills suited to various potential employers. Future programs similar to this are being investigated so more unemployed people can find work and get involved in their local community.

To find out more about the program, contact the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Community Hub on (07) 3318 3660.

Historical painting now calls the Community Hub home

A painting, ‘Returning from exercises’, has been officially presented to the Kelvin Grove Urban Village and is proudly displayed in the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Community Hub. Painter Les Lenton was commissioned by the Village to deliver the artwork which depicts the Kelvin Grove Barracks as it might have been between the two world wars. The painting is detailed in its portrayal of the soldiers, horses, cart and field gun and of the army barracks, most of which still stand today. Les also provided illustrations for the book, Artillery Units at Kelvin Grove: a Tribute to their Guns and Gunners, which was released earlier this year.

Visit the meeting room at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Community Hub for a closer look at this representation of military history at the Village.

New businesses to open in Village Centre

Carraway Street is a hive of activity in preparation for two new businesses that will open at the Village. Keep an eye out for the Little Lily Thai and Sushi Bar which will open in December. This café will be located next to Noodles Inc and offer a range of Asian dishes for patrons. For something a little different, the St Jaromes Tapas bar will open early in the New Year on the corner of Carraway and Ramsgate Streets.

Keep an eye out on the kgurbanvillage.com.au website for contact details.

Business of the month

Business of the month: Noodles Inc

Noodles Inc offers a trendy yet healthy dining option when eating at the Village. Located on Carraway Street, this noodle lover’s paradise offers diners an exotic range of noodle dishes from around the world. It is based on a euro-oriental concept of specialised noodles and pastas; complimenting the east (entrees, rice, traditional tea), west (gourmet salads, coffee) and universally (beer). New editions to the menu include Thai options such as basil chicken, cashew beef, green curry and fragrant rice.

Not only are you able to dine on the premises, there is also a take-away and catering menu that offers options for any occasion.

If you would like to know more about what Noodles Inc has to offer, give them a call on 3831 8805 or visit their website at www.noodlesinc.com.au and they’ll be happy to talk noodles with you.

“It is summer and it is beautiful, but underneath this idyll things are falling apart…”

Beautiful tells the story of a family that goes to a summer resort for their holidays. The daughter falls in love with a local boy, while other relationships are rekindled. Nothing is as it seems. A sophisticated contemporary piece, Beautiful explores the unsaid with Fosse’s uncanny ability to capture the essence of the human condition.

Andrea Moor (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Queensland Theatre Company) makes her directorial debut with this stunning play by Europe’s most-produced living playwright, Jon Fosse.
