Smart students to commence studies at the Village

Smart students to commence studies at the Village

A selection of Queensland’s best and brightest Year 10 and 11 students will be based at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village this year as they join the new Queensland Academy for Creative Industries. The Academy has been developed by Education Queensland as a distinctive learning pathway incorporating a strong partnership with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). It will cater for students of high academic ability with a special interest in the arts and creative industries. The students will be temporarily calling K Block at QUT ‘home’ while the permanent Academy building is constructed on the corner of Musk Avenue and Blamey Street. Work has already commenced on the site and students are expected to occupy the building for the 2008 school year. This Academy will provide an opportunity for Queensland’s best and brightest students to fast track their learning by combining their study in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program with tertiary study, work experience within cutting edge industries and participation in enrichment activities.

For more information, visit the Queensland Academies website.

Five World Premieres in La Boite Theatre Company’s 2007 season at the Roundhouse Theatre

Five World Premieres in La Boite Theatre Company’s 2007 season at the Roundhouse Theatre

La Boite Theatre Company’s 2007 season features five World Premieres filled with laughter, music and spirit. They are:

  • the satirical spin of Stephen Carleton’s ‘The Narcissist’;
  • Rebecca Sparrow’s delightfully daggy take on the late 80s in ‘The Year Nick McGowan Came To Stay’;
  • the stirring score and story of ‘Red Cap’ - performed in both Mount Isa and Brisbane as part of the 2007 Queensland Music Festival;
  • the moving drama of Ian Brown’s ‘Walking By Apple Tree Creek’ - performed by one of Queensland’s most distinguished actors, Carol Burns; and
  • Matthew Ryan’s eccentric electric comedy ‘Wonderland’.

In addition, extra theatrical treats are being presented at the Roundhouse Theatre for the first time in 2007. They are:

  • The Space Between’ by Circa - one of Queensland’s most exciting circus ensembles;
  • Lotte’s Gift’ by David Williamson - a smash hit at the 2006 Noosa Long Weekend starring internationally acclaimed guitarist Karin Schaupp; and
  • the rough poetry of Linda Hassall's ‘Post Office Rose’.

SWAP 2

In October 2006, a successful Fashion Swap was held at the Creative Industries Precinct. The event called for clothing donations which were exchanged for buttons that could then be swapped for other items of clothing at the event. Due to its success, a second event - Swap 2 - is being organised for March 15 from 4pm to 7pm at the Sheds in the Creative Industries Precinct. This event will be expanded to include second hand magazines, CDs, videos and DVDs. It is being organised by QUT’s Fashion School and the Media and Communication School. For more information, contact the Kelvin Grove Urban Village Community Hub on (07) 3318 3660.

The Wii Challenge will showcase two Wii consoles and people will be able to try out older computer games. It is being held in the Block, Creative Industries Precinct, from 2pm to 6pm on 11 and 12 March. A Wii bowling tournament, where the highest score wins a prize, will run from 4pm to 5pm.

Season: 28 March – 9 April
(Preview: 27 March)
Show Times: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 6.30pm (except opening night), Thursday to Saturday 8pm
Opening night: Wednesday 28 March 8pm

This is a unique theatre experience, acclaimed throughout Europe, Japan and Australia. Lyrical, physically extreme and joyously sensual, The Space Between is a powerful exploration of the things that keep us apart and our desire to be together. Three performers journey through explosive acrobatic encounters, lyrical duets and supple physical contortions, as they explore love, loss and desire. Visually drenched in layers of projection and set to a blend of Jacques Brel's songs, industrial sounds by Darrin Verhagin and DJ Shadow; this is stripped back circus of the heart.

For tickets, visit the Roundhouse Theatre website.
