Community spirit shines at Kelvin Grove

Kelvin Grove showed its community spirit on 27 November last year during an open day to mark the fifth anniversary of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

The open day was a chance to showcase the developments at the Village to neighbouring residents as well as the wider community, with the guided tours and displays proving to be the most popular. The Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie, and the Chancellor of QUT, Major-General Peter Arnison, officially welcomed visitors in the morning.

The local community were fully involved in the day, with students from the Kelvin Grove State College providing the stage entertainment and displaying their artworks, and other neighbours such as the Hilltop Gardens Retirement Home and Northey Street City Farm taking market and display stalls.

Music and dance performances kept visitors entertained throughout the day, with the highlight being a bobcat ballet to the tune of Bob the Builder.

A number of community groups and visitors painted a 9-metre mural on the day, which will hold pride of place on the Carraway Street hoardings of Indigo’s Village Centre development until the Centre is completed in mid-2006.

Landscaping wins state award
Award-winning landscaping at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

The parks and streetscapes at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village are a visual feast at the moment, with many plants in full flower. The landscape design has been recognised with a commendation at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects 2005 Queensland Awards.

The award was presented to Hassell, as landscape architect for the project, in recognition of:

“the significant potential for directing future inner urban redevelopment. The role of the Landscape Architect has been an integral part in the creation of public spaces and establishing a strong streetscape that defines pedestrian and vehicular movement. The design foundations set a standard for ongoing development and success of the highly urbanised Kelvin Grove Village.”

Village Connections

A ground-breaking telecommunications initiative has been announced for residents of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, including free phone calls to other subscribers in the Village.

The Department of Housing has engaged specialised communications firm Pivit Pty Ltd to supply and manage a triple-play fibre network within the Village to provide voice, broadband internet and TV — both free-to-air digital and satellite services.

The services will be delivered by Pivit through Kelvin Grove Village Connections, as an alternative to other providers such Optus or Telstra. Residents and businesses who choose Kelvin Grove Village Connections as their provider will be able to call other Village Connections subscribers within the Village free of charge, in addition to accessing regular phone and web services.

The option of using Kelvin Grove Village Connections will be available to the first residents who move into the Village early in 2006.
