The Village Centre’s organic market Inn Season is reaping success for the stunning design of its outlet.

The store received a commendation in the Retail Interior Design category of the Interior Design Awards and was short listed in the Colour in Commercial Interior Design category. The Interior Design Awards promote excellence in Australian design through an internationally recognised annual program which is backed by the Design Institute of Australia.

Inn Season has also been nominated in The Royal Australian Institute of Architects National Architecture Awards. The Queensland Awards will be presented in August with the winners going onto the national competition. The National Architecture Awards are the most prestigious in the design and construction industry.

The architect of Inn Season is Cox Rayner.

The look of Inn Season, an inspirational and convenient organic food concept store, is inspired by the traditional European-style farmer’s markets and has been designed to complement the surrounding vibrant Village Centre. Using all natural materials and finishes including polished concrete floors and earthy timber shelving, the design emphasises the environmental sustainability of the Village.

He extended a special thank you to the author, Helen Klaebe, for her dedication and commitment to telling the unique stories which provide an interesting insight into the Kelvin Grove Urban Village site.

Grant awarded to the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation

Tissue Therapies Limited, based at the Queensland University of Technology’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at the Village, was recently awarded a $225,040 Innovation Projects Fund grant from the Queensland Government.

The Tissue Therapies research project will contribute to simplifying the development of stem cell therapies by producing a product which is a synthetic alternative to animal and human materials required in the manufacture of stem cell products. This is a world-first development which will help save lives while also offering a marketable product to the rest of world.

A future expected outcome of this development is the production of effective regenerative medicine therapies which will also help address the critical shortage of organ donors.

Movie in the Park a great night out

Friday 20 April was a hive of activity at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village with the first Movie in the Park evening. More than 450 people turned out with their deck chairs and picnic blankets to view “The Devil Wears Prada” in Kulgun Park on Carraway Street.

Patrons took advantage of the food and drink that was on sale from the adjacent businesses while others brought along a picnic. It was an enjoyable evening for all who attended.

Another Movie in the Park is being planned so keep an eye on the Kelvin Grove Urban Village website Events Calendar for the details.

The 1964 Mount Isa dispute is among the most significant in Australia’s history. Lasting over seven months it split the nation, with the miners and their community coming up against the company, the State Government and even their own union. Red Cap: The Exhibition brings to life the action caught by the press and television of the time, as Pat Mackie leads the workers against their bosses and the police.

See the media coverage of the events and material from Pat Mackie’s personal records of the dispute in a dynamic display of Queensland workers’ struggle for better wages and conditions. Private group visits with guided tour and curatorial talk, available at any time by prior arrangement (groups 20+ only). Red Cap: The Exhibition will complement the stage production of Red Cap at the Roundhouse Theatre.

Direct from the World Premiere in Mount Isa - Commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival

A co-production between Queensland Music Festival, La Boite Theatre Company and Mount Isa City Council

Book / Lyrics – Janis Balodis
Composer / Music Director – Iain Grandage

The Mount Isa mining dispute of 1964 arose from a struggle for better wages and work conditions but escalated into a no-holds-barred battle. The miners, their wives and the whole city rose up and pitted themselves against their Company and union, the media and the Government who were all determined to break their will to fight. A leader emerged. His name was Pat Mackie (with his distinctive red cap). A tale of community triumph over rampant authoritarianism, Red Cap is an exciting and original music-theatre experience that captures the Aussie battler's fight for dignity, self-determination, and the quintessential right to a fair-go.
