The skyline at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village is rapidly evolving with construction now full steam ahead on six different sites.

The Brisbane Housing Company has started work on the third of its developments – a 56-unit complex opposite the Creative Industries Precinct. Designed by leading Brisbane architects Fairweather Proberts, it contains units from studio through to 3-bedroom configurations, as well as some commercial space at street level. The Brisbane Housing Company has another two developments under construction, with its Ramsgate Street complex due for completion by the end of this year.

Indigo’s Village Centre and QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation have building works underway and are beginning to take on their finished form. Both are due for completion in mid-2006.

Construction has also just started on The Village Edge units and townhouses.

Integrated Master Plan cover

The Integrated Master Plan is the blueprint for all future development at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. It brings together the social, cultural and economic requirements for building the community and sets out more than 200 detailed place-making strategies.

As the Integrated Master Plan is an extensive and complex document, an executive summary has been published to communicate the vision and ideals of the project. It can be viewed on-line on the project website at: http://www.kgurbanvillage.com.au/about/resources.shtm.

Year 8 students from Kelvin Grove State College get creative at the Urban Village.

More than 200 Year 8 students from Kelvin Grove State College descended on the Urban Village for three days in August as part of a rich learning exercise. Their task was to design a visually exciting and energy efficient structure in McCaskie Park which could be used as a recreation and performance space.

Members of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village project team, QUT academic staff and others associated with the project briefed the students to help them in their task, which also required a sun study and environmental impact assessment. The students then worked in groups to come up with a suitable design for presentation to a panel of mentors from the project team.

Kelvin Grove State College makes the most of its location as a direct neighbour by incorporating the Urban Village as much as possible into its curriculum, covering topics from public art through to town planning and urban design.

La Boite:

The Dance of Jeremiah

The Dance of Jeremiah

20 October – 5 November (previews 18 and 19 October)

La Boite’s last production for 2005 is an award-winning comedy by one of Queensland’s most exciting new writers. The Dance of Jeremiah is a hilarious look at office stress, consumer culture and imagination run wild.

After the death of his beloved mentor, strange things start happening to Jerry Daniels. Office desks are chasing him. Self-help tapes are talking to him. Umbrellas are falling from the sky. But the world of advertising is no place for weakness. The big promotion is up for grabs. His ad campaign has no product. And his therapist has more problems than he does. The stage comes to life in this whimsical comedy and theatrical feast.

For bookings, contact QTIX on 136 246 or visit the La Boite website on www.laboite.com.au.
