New website showcases the Village

The Kelvin Grove Urban Village has launched a brand new website, with an updated design to match the new project branding, improved navigation and new features including an events calendar.

The new website profiles the developments that are completed, underway or planned, as well as the community development initiatives in place to support the new community. Popular information from the previous site, including the section on residential developments and the 'Sharing Stories' social history pages, has been retained.

Roll-up for Market Day at the Village Centre

The long-awaited Village Centre retail development will open with a bang this month, kicking off with a Market Day on Sunday 22 October.

Visitors can sample the new retailers’ specialities and enjoy free live music, with Ranger Stacey as MC.  Free children’s entertainment includes face painting and a giant slide.  Indigo is giving away five iPods throughout the day, as well as a trip for two people to Palm Cove.

Free parking for the market day is available at the Village Centre, in surrounding streets and in the designated QUT car parks.

Writers at the Village

Writers came to the Kelvin Grove Urban Village in September, with the opening events for the Brisbane Writers Festival held at the Creative Industries Precinct. More than 300 people attended the master classes and workshops on the opening day, and the 'Feel of Steel' lunchtime panel of crime fiction writers.

In the evening, Orange-prize-winning author Lionel Shriver delivered the opening address at the Roundhouse Theatre and jazz musician James Morrison entertained the crowds with his storytelling and musical performances.

Grey Gums Park opens to the public

The Kelvin Grove Urban Village has a new park, with the completion of Grey Gums Park as part of the final infrastructure works.

Concealed from view from the main streets in the Village, Grey Gums Park is a private pocket of tranquillity, with a shaded round lawn, fitness equipment and abundant bird life in the surrounding trees. The park is named after the Grey Gums scattered through it, which date back to pre-European settlement.

Grey Gums Park can be accessed via Robinson Place, and by stairs off Victoria Park Road.

What’s on at La Boite and Creative Industries Precinct

La Boite:

sex:cubed

sex:cubed
27 October – 11 November 2006

A collection of short works by various artists including Alex Broun, Helen Howard, Victor Kline and David Megarrity

‘sex:cubed’ is a collection of short pieces by various writers each with a different spin on this complex word. Just as the range of human sexual expression runs from innocent to shocking, so ‘sex:cubed’ mines the darkest and funniest parts of this altogether human activity. Be warned… it’s frank, full on and close to the bone…

For tickets contact QTIX on 136 246 or visit the La Boite website on www.laboite.com.au.

Public art is increasingly being incorporated into urban developments, as it is aesthetically and culturally important to all community members. The Kelvin Grove Urban Village has enthusiastically embraced public art in its infrastructure and built environment. The Sharing Stories 'Place' exhibition is an opportunity for Visual Arts PhD students to explore and showcase public art’s connection with space, environment and history.
