Indigo and Brisbane Housing Company successful in Urban Development Institute of Australia awards

Indigo and Brisbane Housing Company successful in Urban Development Institute of Australia awards

There were triple the reasons to celebrate at the recent Urban Development Institute of Australia Suncorp Awards held in Brisbane on Saturday 23 June. Three of the prestigious national awards were won by Kelvin Grove Urban Village partners. Queensland development company, Indigo won the highly coveted Queensland State Presidents Award and the Multi-Level Development Award while Brisbane Housing Company was awarded the Affordable Housing award for the Hartopp Lane development.

Indigo secured the president’s award for The Village Centre, a $150 million integrated residential and retail development which forms the centrepiece of the bustling Kelvin Grove Urban Village. The development was recognised for urban consolidation and setting a new standard for urban living in Australia and for its design which incorporates many environmentally sustainable features.

Brisbane Housing Company received recognition for the development in Hartopp Lane which provides 31 apartments of affordable housing and 12 boarding house rooms, that meet the aesthetic, engineering, built form and urban planning demands of the wider market. The building is designed to meet strong ecological principles including water and energy efficiency and has achieved a minimum 4-star energy rating.

MFS Diversified Group to develop Kelvin Grove residential units

Two lots at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village were recently sold to MFS Diversified Group for a multi-unit residential development.

The sites are located on Victoria Park Road and back onto Grey Gums Park. The total area is 5,416m2 and the proposed development for the site includes 118 units in one, two and three-bedroom configurations.

In October 2006, MFS Diversified Group acquired Villa World Limited, a national developer of residential communities. The group’s community development arm will develop the Kelvin Grove Urban Village residential units under its MODA brand.

MFS Diversified Group chief executive Brent Hailey said the group recognised the need to develop individually designed, integrated housing solutions that cater for a wide variety of end-users seeking housing in inner urban locations close to amenities, particularly public transport.

“The building design incorporates the best ecologically sustainable design features, both internally and externally. The internal unit designs, large roof overhangs and outdoor entertaining areas will take advantage of the sites’ unique features such as park and city views and will reflect Brisbane’s sub tropical climate,” he said.

Construction on the units is anticipated to begin in mid 2008.

Unique development opportunity opens at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village

Lot 7 was released to the market on 9 August for sale by expression of interest. Located in the heart of the Village, opposite the Village Centre and adjoining Kulgun Park, the 1,767m2 site will be the only one available in the precinct for the development of hotel accommodation, café-bar and/or serviced apartments.

A report released by Deloite Hotel Benchmark indicates that hotel accommodation in Brisbane ranked the highest of any Australian capital city for growth in capacity and demand in room nights sold. Brisbane also has the highest hotel occupancy rate worldwide which makes this site an attractive long term investment.

To find out more, visit the Kelvin Grove Urban village website.

Expressions of interest close at 5.00pm on Friday 19 October.

Queensland Academy for Creative Industries offers high performing students in the Arts an opportunity to study the rigourous International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. All students who study IB commit to the study of a second language and can choose from Spanish, French, German or Mandarin.

A current Queensland Academy for Creative Industries Mandarin language student, Veronika Plant recently took first prize in the year eleven division of the Shanghai Cup Speech Competition. Her prize was a two-week study tour to China which she will take at the end of this year. It will be her first overseas trip and will allow Veronika to experience the rich culture of China’s most modern and exciting city, visit a range of Chinese education institutions and interact with Chinese students. Also an outstanding Visual arts student, Veronika’s goal is to establish a cultural and economic bridge between Australia and China. She says the award has opened a whole new world of possibilities for her. “I’m so excited I can’t believe it,” she said when the award was announced.

The award was highly competitive with all judges commenting on the high standard of participants. “To win this competition Veronika had to compete against the best students from public and private schools across Queensland,” said Queensland Academy for Creative Industries Principal, Mr. John Jose. “Her success should be an inspiration for all students.”

The Shanghai Cup Speech Competition, was open to Queensland students of Chinese language in Years 11 and 12 as well as tertiary students, and attracted 46 entrants from 14 schools and 4 universities. It was sponsored by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and supported by the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts and Queensland Education and Training International.

WALKING BY APPLE TREE CREEK By Ian Brown

World Premiere
WALKING BY APPLE TREE CREEK

By Ian Brown
A La Boite Theatre Company Commission

Join Del and Stan, two Aussie battlers, in their Winnebago, as their ultimate Australian adventure draws to an unexpected end.

On the road they've faced the Big Pumpkin in Beaudesert, the Big Prawn in Ballina, the Big Chicken in Moonbi, the Big Snake in Ayr, the Big Beer Bottle and Big Shell in Tewantin, the Big Pineapples in Gympie and Nambour. Not to mention the Big Bull in Rockhampton and the Big Avocado at Tropical Fruit World in Tweed Heads. Now they must face the big things in their own lives.

Del loves to talk - about everything - but she’s getting frustrated with Stan’s silence.

These two grey nomads, from the silent generation, face not only the daily challenges of being on the road - lost keys, fold away chairs, a mobile phone and portable barbeque but also the overwhelming effects of battling with dementia.

This tender, provoking and refreshingly amusing journey will have you walking down your own memory lane. Jump on board and strap your self in for a funny yet deeply moving Australian tale.

“To have and to hold, for better for worse, in sickness and in health, while we both shall live” are spoken words that can never be abandoned.

A rare gem, funny and truthful and deeply moving.

Featuring Australian theatrical icon, Carol Burns.

Director: Jean-Marc Russ
Featuring: Carol Burns & Bob Newman
