Helmets to Hardhats
Growing up in Brisbane and going to school nearby, I had known where the Teachers College was. The first time I remember going to the college was in 1979. I had just finished school and I went with some friends who had enrolled at the college in O Week to see a band play. It was the Australian band Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and it was a great night for dancing and meeting people. I remember finishing up exhausted from my bad dancing and hoarse from my bad singing. I came back to work on the Kelvin Grove project at QUT in 1999. I recall the first time I looked inside the barracks buildings where the Creative Industries now are. They were in pretty poor condition and seemed to be divided into a great number of small rooms, and every second room seemed to be a bar. The site was heritage listed and we knew that any work we did would be very closely examined. We asked the architects to look at the original designs to see if we could convert them back close to the original design. We took our proposals through the Heritage Council where they were all approved. I got a bit nervous though, when I took a member of the Heritage Council on a visit later. We went through the completed buildings he kept on saying: 'Oh I don’t remember that; I can’t remember seeing that in the plans'. Anyway, I think we did a good job on the buildings and they’re very popular with visitors and people who used to work here.
